About Home Sharing Program of Somerset County, Inc.

HomeSharing Program of Somerset County has been operational since 1984. The program serves all people in Somerset County who are in need of affordable housing. Clients contact the agency and a telephone screening is done. A brief application is completed, which includes three reference checks. Staff and/or specially trained volunteers check the references.
Once completed, social work staff meets with home seekers in the office, and visit home providers in their homes. When this is accomplished, providers and seekers are referred to each other and make their own phone contacts and arrangements to meet. When a match seems imminent, a shared living interview is scheduled between both parties and social worker to discuss mutual expectations and responsibilities.
Mission Statement: Since 1984, HomeSharing's mission has been to prevent homelessness by matching "Providers" - residents who need to share their homes or apartments in order to maintain them, with "Seekers" - individuals searching for affordable housing in the community. HomeSharing is unique. We are the only agency in New Jersey using the shared housing model to serve the working poor whose incomes are at or below the poverty level and who are not eligible for other social services. HomeSharing is also committed to assisting its clients in locating and utilizing other resources such as the Food Bank, low-cost medical care, and other support services.
